The Prophet, , had many deputies whom he assigned for different tasks. In this article we will attempt to highlight the names of the Companions whom he, , used as deputies on different occasions.
His deputies during Hajj
The Prophet, , appointed Abu Bakr may Allah be pleased with him to lead people in Hajj, and sent Ali ibn Abi Taalib may Allah be pleased with him to teach people the Chapter At-Tawbah immediately after him.
His deputies in leadership:
1. Ali ibn Abi Taalib may Allah be pleased with him: The Prophet, , appointed him as the supreme judge in Yemen, and charged him with recovering dues from its people.
2. Bathaan ibn Saasaan, may Allah be pleased with him: He was born in Heraam Jood. The Prophet, , appointed him as a ruler over Yemen after the death of Kisra. He was the first emir in Yemen in Islam, and he was also the first non-Arab king who accepted Islam.
3. Shahr ibn Baathaan, may Allah be pleased with both of them: The Prophet, , appointed him to succeed his father in Yemen after his death. When Al-Aswad Al-'Ansi claimed prophethood, Shahr, may Allah be pleased with him, fought against him and was martyred. Al-Aswad then married his wife, Aazaad, who helped her cousin, Fayrooz Ad-Daylami, in killing Al-Aswad.
4. Khaalid ibn Sa'eed ibn Al-'Aas may Allah be pleased with him: He is Abu Saeed Al-Qurashi Al-Umawi, may Allah be pleased with him. The Prophet, , entitled him to succeed Shahr ibn Baazaan, may Allah be pleased with him, in ruling Sana'aa and its adjacent areas after his martyrdom. It is narrated that he was the first one who wrote Bismillaah ir-Rahmaan ir-Raheem, (in the name of Allah, the eternally Merciful, the especially Merciful). It is also said that he accepted Islam immediately after Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, by which he constituted one-third of Islam. He came to Islam after he had a dream that guided him to the mission of the Prophet, .
He emigrated to Al-Habashah (Ethiopia) during the second Hijrah and stayed there for approximately thirteen years. He returned from Al-Habashah with Ja'far ibn Abi Taalib, may Allah be pleased with him, to the Prophet , , in Khaybar, and witnessed with him the compensatory `Umrah, and the conquests of Makkah, Hunayn, At-Taa'if, and Tabook. Moreover, the Prophet, , sent him to collect the obligatory charity of Yemen (and it is said that it was the obligatory charity of Mithahj and Sana'aa), and the Prophet, , died while he was still there.
His death is a controversial issue; it is said that Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, charged him with leading an army to fight in Ash-Shaam and he died in Marj Al-'Ussaar. It is also said that he died in the year fourteen A.H. at the beginning of the caliphate of 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, and others said that his death was in the Battle of Ajnaadeen, twenty-four nights before the death of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him.
5. Al-Muhaajir ibn Abi Umayyah Al-Makhzoomi, may Allah be pleased with him: His name was Al-Waleed, but the Prophet, , changed it into Al-Muhaajir. The Prophet, , appointed him as the leader of Kindah and As-Sudaf, but he, , died and he did not reach there. Then Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, sent him to fight against the apostates. He is the brother of Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, the wife of the Prophet, .
The Prophet , reproached him for not participating in the Tabook campaign, but Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, interceded for him and the Prophet, , accepted her intercession. Furthermore, he is the one who conquered the fort of An-Najeer in Hadhramawt near Yemen, where the apostates took refuge under the leadership of Al-Ash'ath ibn Qays, who was captured and sent to Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him.
6. Zeyaad ibn Labeed Al-Ansaari, may Allah be pleased with him: His nickname is Abu Abdullaah. He went to live with the Prophet , , in Makkah till he emigrated with him to Madeenah, so that he was called the Emigrant of the Ansaar. He witnessed Al-Aqabah, and all the battles with the Prophet, , including Badr, Uhud and Al-Khandaq. The Prophet, , appointed him in Hadhramawt, and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, charged him with fighting against the apostates in Kindah. He is the Companion who arrested Al-Ash'ath ibn Qays and brought him to Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him. He died at the beginning of the era of Mu'aawiyah, may Allah be pleased with him.
7. Abu Moosa Al-Ash'ari, may Allah be pleased with him: He is Abdullaah ibn Qays ibn Saleem Al-Ash'ari Az-Zubaydi Al-Yamaani, the Companion of the Prophet, the great Imaam, jurist and teacher of the Quran. He was one of the great conquerors, and one of the two judges in Siffeen between Ali and Mu'aawiyah, may Allah be pleased with them. He accepted Islam in Makkah, then came to the Prophet, , with the people of the two ships after the conquest of Khaybar.
The Prophet, appointed him as an emir in Zabeed, 'Adan and As-Saahil. Furthermore, 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, deployed him in Al-Basrah, and 'Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, assigned him to Al-Koofah, where he died. He was virtuous, a great worshiper, and had a pleasant voice in reciting the Quran. He combined knowledge, worship, Jihaad and good faith, and he is from those who recited the Quran to the Prophet, . There is a difference of opinion regarding the year of his death, but the year forty-four A.H. is the most correct.
