My Husband of 8 years left me and moved out of the country. Leaving me with all the bills, morgage, ect. I have to work two jobs and it still is not enough, I have to reley on my children. First he left because of work, then when he was gone he said it was because of money, the children then me. A differant excuse. Is this right??? I have not spoken to him in months, he changed his number, and wont e-mail me back.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Allaah ordained the husband to spend on his wife and take care of her and her children, and the man is responsible for his family and he will be questioned about the people under his guardianship, as conveyed by the Prophet . Therefore, it is not permissible for the husband to neglect this responsibility about which he will be questioned on the Day of Judgment. It is confirmed that the Prophet said: “It is enough a sin for a person not to provide means of sustenance to those whom he is obliged to support.” [Ahmad and Abu Daawood]. Hence, if your husband had moved out of the country leaving this responsibility for you, then he was wrong.
As regards what you may do now, you have two options: you have either to be patient as he might come back one day, or take your case to one of the Islamic centres so that they would do what is necessary and repel the harm off you [by divorcing you from him].
Concerning the bills and the mortgage, if your husband is liable and obliged to pay them, then you are not obliged to pay them, and you have the right to ask him to compensate you for whatever you had paid if you paid anything with the intention of asking him to compensate you. Also, you have the right to ask him to compensate you for whatever you had spent on yourself if you did not do so with the intention of charity for him.
