Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Among the conditions for the validity of the prayer is the purity of body, clothes and of the place where the prayer will be performed. The urine of an infant who is not eating food is impure according to the view of the majority of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them and some scholars reported that this view was agreed by the scholars, and the opinion of those who contradicted this view is not considerable.

As regards the infant who eats food, then his urine is the same like the urine of an adult person without any difference of opinion among the scholars.

In any case, whether the child is young or old, in order to purify the place that is stained by urine, if it is a bed – as it is the case here – it is by pouring water over the place of impurity, but it is not an obligation to take off the bed sheet/mattress or to squeeze it.

As regards dryness, then this does not render the impure place pure according to the opinion of the majority of the scholars, whereas some of them are of the view that dryness purifies the impure place.

The ‘Fataawa’ of Ibn Taymiyyah reads: “The impure ground becomes pure with the sun and wind if no trace of the impurity is left, and this is the view of Abu Haneefah may Allaah have mercy upon him. Nevertheless, it is not permissible to use it (that ground) in performing Tayammum (dry ablution), but it is permissible to perform the prayer on it afterwards even if it is not washed. Moreover, other items become pure with the sun and wind as well, and this is one of the opinions of Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon him.

To conclude, the view of the majority of the scholars is the best one in order to be on the safe side and be acquitted from sin. Therefore, it is not acceptable to perform the prayer on the place you are sure it is stained by the urine of your child unless you pour water over it.

Allaah Knows best.
