Is Shu‘ayb (Jethro), may Allaah exalt his mention, the Prophet who is mentioned in the story of Prophet Moosa (Moses), may Allaah exalt his mention, in chapter Al-Qasas (Chapter 28 of the Quran)?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.
There are different opinions about the identity of the old man who married his daughter off to Moosa and who is mentioned in chapter Al-Qasas. It is said that he was Shu‘ayb and this is the most common opinion among the scholars, including Al-Hasan Al-Basri and Maalik ibn Anas . It was specifically mentioned in one Hadeeth, but it is not Saheeh.
It was also said that the old man was not Shu‘ayb, but his nephew or cousin or perhaps a believer from his people. Ibn Katheer reported all these opinions.
