assalamu alaikum my question is that if a muslim meets you and asks "how are you?" and you say alhamdulilah(with the intention of praising allah or answering their question) even if you don't actually feel alright or OK, does this count as lying? (whereby you may deceive the brother into thinking you're alright by saying alhamdulilah even if its not true). jazakallahu khairan.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.
This is not lying at all, as Allaah, The Almighty, should be praised at times of ease and at times of hardship. ‘Aa’ishah related that when the Prophet saw something which he liked, he would say: “Al-Hamdu Lillaah (Praise be to Allaah) by Whose Grace righteous deeds take place.”; and if he disliked what he saw, he would say: “Al-Hamdu Lillaah under all circumstances.” [Ibn Maajah]
Besides, Suhayb related that the Prophet said: “Wonderful indeed is the matter of a believer, there is good in all his affairs, and this is only for the believer. If something good happens to him and he is grateful, then this is good for him, and if a calamity befalls him and he is patient, then this is also good for him.” [Muslim]
Allaah Knows best.
