How to Attain the Fear of Allah

Question

Assalamualikum, How can one naturally cry from the fear of Allah ( swt)?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

This happens to a slave of Allah when he sincerely fears Allah The Almighty and attains true mindfulness of Him. Verily, the tears of the eye are but a reflection of the fear of the heart. This state cannot be attained except through knowing Allah The Exalted, His Names, Attributes, and rulings, as well as realizing His great right over His slaves, and their negligence in fulfilling those rights.

He should then acquire knowledge of people’s different situations in the Hereafter, their varying ranks therein, and the kinds of bliss or punishment prepared for them.

Belief in Allah The Exalted and the Last Day is the key to attaining due fear and awe of Allah that urge one to refrain from having extensive ambitions in this worldly life and to perform good deeds. Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge.} [Quran 35:28] Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “The more the servant knows Allah, the greater his fear of Him. Ibn Mas‘ood may Allaah be pleased with him said: ‘Fear of Allah is the essence of true knowledge.’ Lack of fear of Allah is only due to lack of one's knowledge of Him; those who fear Allah the most are those who know Him the most. Whoever knows Allah becomes intensely bashful of Him, fearful of Him, and loving of Him; and the more He knows Him, the more he loves Him, fears Him, and the more bashful he becomes of Him...” [Tareeq Al-Hijratayn]

The shortest way to know Allah The Exalted and people’s different situations in the Hereafter is to contemplate the Quran and recite it regularly while keenly acting upon its teachings, along with sincere reliance on Allah, seeking His help as due, and remembering Him and supplicating Him frequently. Allah The Exalted Says (what means):

• {The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.} [Quran 8:2]

• {Indeed, they who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord* And they who believe in the signs of their Lord* And they who do not associate anything with their Lord* And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord -* It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein.} [Quran 23:57-61]

Allah knows best.
