Assalamu alaikum. I live in Prague and work in a bakery that produces only bread and buns, with no meat or alcohol. I shape the products and prepare orders, and I only pack the boxes—I do not handle delivery. However, these buns are supplied to non-halal establishments where they are used to make burgers. I do not directly handle anything haram. Is my income from this work permissible?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (
) is His Slave and Messenger.
There is nothing wrong with this type of work or with the income earned from it, because it does not involve directly committing something unlawful, nor does it involve intended assistance or direct cooperation in sin.
The issue of determining what constitutes cooperation in sin and transgression has been the subject of extensive discussion and research among the members of the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America during its fifth session. Among the conclusions they reached is that if the assistance is indirect and not intended, then it is not prohibited.
Examples of this include one who sells something that may be used for both lawful and unlawful purposes without intending to assist others in sin, or one who gives another person money without intending for him to purchase alcohol with it. If the recipient then buys alcohol and drinks it, there is no sin upon the one who gave him the money so long as he did not intend to assist him in committing the prohibited act.
Also included in this category are buying from and selling to polytheists and openly sinful Muslims, renting to them, and giving charity to them.
Allah Knows best
