I need to pay for the marriage of my sister, I am on the job. Can I get a bank loan?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Loans taken from banks are of two types:
A. A good loan: it is the kind of loan that does not involve Riba (interests and/or usury). This kind is permissible and recommended from the Islamic point of view as a procedure that incurs great reward.
B. A loan that involves Riba (interest and/or usury): this kind of loan is Islamically forbidden and one must not resort to it unless under compelling necessity, for it is Riba, as previously stated in Fataawa 81364, 81409 and 82049.
Helping your sister is not a necessity that makes Riba permissible. The kind of necessity that makes Riba permissible is when a person does not consume what is forbidden, he would be subjecting himself to death or nearly so, or faces an unbearable condition.
Allaah Knows best.
