Expiation for lying in order to keep his promise

Question

I want to know do you have have to do some type of fasting, if you kept a promise that led you to lying because you felt like it was the right thing to do for a good reason i guess?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We have already issued Fataawa 90665, 88412 and 84728 clarifying that it is forbidden to lie as lying leads to Hellfire, so please refer to them. Whoever lied is obliged to repent to Allaah but he is not obliged to fast. However, if one fasts with the hope of expiating for the sin of lying, then this is good, as Allaah Says (what means): {Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds (i.e. small sins).} [Quran 11:114].

Allaah knows best.
