Fatwa CenterShalwar kameez as a uniform of a secondary school for girls
Question
salam.Is a muslim girl allowed to wear trousers or long skirt? Due to my secodary school uniform my father wont let me go to school.I am only allowed to wear shalwar kameez. Please answer my question.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
We have already clarified in Fatwa 88503 that if a long skirt fulfils the conditions of a proper Hijab, then it is permissible to wear it otherwise no.
As regards the trousers, they usually shape the woman's body. Additionally by wearing them, women resemble men, therefore, in our view it is not permissible for a woman to wear trousers unless she wears a flock on top of it that covers it, and the like. Therefore, we advise you to wear the proper Hijab and not neglect it due to studies or anything else, and you should know that you will stand before Allaah and you will be asked about your Hijab and about your religious requirements and not about your studies.
If the school obliges the school girls to wear a uniform which does not fulfil the requirements of a proper Hijab, then you should look for another school. Allaah, The Most Truthful, Says (what means): {And whoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out from every difficulty. And He will provide him form sources he never could imagine.} [Quran 65:2-3]. Allaah further Says (what means): {And whoever fears Allaah -- He will make for him of his matter ease.}[Quran 65:4].
