Question:

I am a Christian man, and I believe Muhammed to be the last prophet (peace be upon him) I believe that Allah is the one true God, and Jesus as my Savior, of course as well as Allah. Would I be a muslim under these circumstances if I wanted to marry a muslim woman?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, you should know that your statement: “I am a Christian man” means that you are still on the religion of Christianity and you have not yet embraced Islam. In order to embrace Islam, one has to utter the Two Testimonies of Faith, which is to say: "Ash-Hadu Allaa Ilaaha Illallaah Wa Ash-Hadu Anna Muhammadan Rasoolullaah" (I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah), and abide by their meaning like worshipping Allaah Alone and affirming the prophecy of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and practicing the apparent religious rites, like the prayer, fasting and so forth. Also, in order to be a Muslim, you must believe that ‘Eesa (Jesus) may Allaah exalt his mention is a Slave and Messenger of Allaah and His Word (Be) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit created by Him, and that ‘Eesa may Allaah exalt his mention was not God or Son of God. In addition to this, one has to declare himself free from anything that is contrary to the religion of Islam. So, if you fulfill all this, then you are a Muslim.

However, just believing that Allaah is the true God, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is the last Messenger, is not enough for embracing Islam and ruling that you are a Muslim. Therefore, you are not permitted to marry a Muslim woman if you remain on your position.

As regards your belief that ‘Eesa may Allaah exalt his mention is your Savior, meaning that you believe that he was killed for the sin of Aadam (Adam) may Allaah exalt his mention that affected all the people – as the Christians claim – then this is a wrong belief.

A person who has this belief cannot be considered as a Muslim because this belief is contrary to what the Quran teaches that ‘Eesa may Allaah exalt his mention was not killed; rather, he was saved by Allaah as He took him up to Him. Allaah Says (what means): {And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it, they follow nothing but assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. Rather, Allaah raised him (with his body and soul) to Himself. And ever is Allaah Exalted in Might and Wise.}[Quran 4:157-158] For more benefit, please refer to Fataawa (plural of Fatwa, i.e. a religious ruling): was not crucified ">89547, 88424 and 84195.

Also, for more information about why the Christians’ belief in salvation is wrong, please refer to Fatwa 83647, and for more benefit about the falsity of the present – day Christianity and about the contradictions of the Gospels, please refer to Fatwa 85307, and for more benefit about Islam, please refer to Fataawa 88906, 85234, 81979, and 111063.

Allaah Knows best.
