Question:

bismillahi ar-rahmani ar-rahim assalamu alaikom wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu dear brothers i want to ask you a question. i'm in italy and an imam was arrested here in italy ad a group of imams and associations want to ask the grace for him from the president of the italian repubblic. Is this halal or haram? jazakum Allah khairan

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Endeavoring to help the Muslims and repel harm from them is something Islamically required, and it is possible for this to be by seeking the help of a non-Muslim.

In this meaning, Ibn Is-Haaq and others reported that when the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) came back from At-Taa’if, he entered Makkah under the protection of a non-Muslim man whose name was Al-Mut’im ibn ‘Adiyy. Similarly, when Abu Bakr may Allaah be pleased with him wanted to migrate to Abyssinia (Ethiopia) he came back and he entered (Makkah) under the protection of Ibn Ad-Dughunnah, who was a non-Muslim.

Allaah Knows best.
