All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
The first Hadeeth was reported by At-Tabaraani and others with different wordings. Al-Haafith Al-‘Iraaqi said its chain of narrators is very Dha’eef [weak] and Al-Albaani said it is Munkar [rejectable]. However, its meaning is that:
a) The toilet is the house of the devil because it is a place of impurities, dirt, and where the ‘Awrah of the people is revealed.
b) His book is poetry, meaning the poetry that includes obscene words, because poetry is words: if its meaning is good, then it is good and if its meaning is bad, then it is bad.
c) The caller to the devil's prayer is the musical instruments because they are forbidden sounds that divert people from the path of Allaah.
As regards the second Hadeeth, it was narrated by Hamnah Bint Jahsh and it was reported by Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi . As-San’aani said: “Its meaning is that the devil found a way to make her doubt about the matters of her religion, her purity and her prayer until he made her forget her normal menses and thus she looked like she was hit by him. However, it is most likely to be a real hit from him as it is not impossible to understand the meaning literally.”
However, this Hadeeth implies that the devil has an effect on what happened to this woman, which having discharges outside the monthly periods due to this hit. But this does not necessarily mean that it is jinn possession or magic, and it is not necessary that each discharge outside the monthly menses is resulted from a hit from the devil; the evidence about this is the statement of the Prophet to Faatimah Bint Abi Hubaysh when she asked him about her discharges outside the monthly menses: “It is from a blood vessel and not menses.”
Allaah Knows best.
