Question:

What is the religious ruling about a person who buries some Quranic verses or an amulet when he begins constructing a new building or a house?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam, is His slave and messenger.

This is one of the wrong religious innovations that are widespread among people nowadays. Nevertheless, this act has no grounds in the Quran or the Sunnah, nor was it done by any of the righteous predecessors may Allaah have mercy upon them. It is stated in a narration on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that a person who does an act that is not in accordance with the way of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, it will be rejected. [Ahmad and Muslim]

The proper alternative provided by reciting the Quran in the house, especially chapter Al-Baqarah (2nd chapter of Quran). On the authority of Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, explained that houses where the Quran is not recited are like graves, and he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )  pointed out that Satan flees from a house where chapter Al-Baqarah is recited. [Muslim] This is one of the best ways to expel Satan from a house.

 Allaah Knows best.
