Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

First of all, you should know that purity from menstruation is achieved by either of the two following matters: Dryness of the vagina from blood or what is related to it such as yellowish or brownish discharge; or emission of the white discharge. If the woman sees either of these two signs, then she is pure and has to perform Ghusl and do what the pure woman does. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 127629.

Accordingly, whenever the blood stops on the third day, as you have stated, then you are pure and have to perform Ghusl. If it returns on the fifth or sixth day, then you are menstruating again and if those drops of blood stop, then you become pure again and you have to perform Ghusl.

It is worth noting here that the period of purity that occurs in between those two bleedings is valid purity in which prayer is also valid as well as all other acts of worship.

As for what you have mentioned about the return of your period on the 12th or 13th day, then if that period is counted from the first day of menstruation, then it is within the maximum time of menstruation, which is 15 days. Consequently, you have to look at that discharge, if it is blood, i.e. its color and shape is like that of blood, then it is menstruation from which it is obligatory to perform Ghusl when it stops. If it is a brownish or yellowish discharge, then it is not considered menstruation, and you should only wash it and perform ablution (if you want to perform prayer).

However, if those twelve days started after the stopping of the blood as the given example indicates, then it is not in the possible time of menstruation and thus it is not menstruation but rather Istihaadhah (i.e. bleeding outside your monthly period). For more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 96052and 108423.

From what is mentioned previously, you know that what your friend told you is incorrect and also that the bloodless days in between days of bleeding are days of purity in which prayer and other acts of worship are obligatory.

Accordingly, if you have left prayer in a time in which it was obligatory, then you have to make up for what you have missed according to the opinion of the majority of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them contrary to Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him who viewed that making up for them is not obligatory.

Allaah Knows best.
