Question:
As salamalekum The name of a person is Ateeq Mohammed khan and if he writes it in a short form Ateeq Mohd. khan . Is it wrong? Bcoz I have heard one should not use short form Mohd.
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger.
Apparently – and Allaah knows best – writing the name in that manner is permissible if it does not involve any bad intent, like mockery or the like. Al-Bukhari wrote a chapter entitled: “Whoever calls on someone and omits a letter from his name”, and he mentioned in it the statement of the Prophet to ‘Aa’ishah : “O 'Aa'ish, this is Jibreel (angel Gabriel) sending his greetings to you.” She replied: “Peace and Allaah's Mercy be upon him.” Furthermore, the Prophet called Anjashah, his servant boy: “O Anjash, pull the camels slowly when there are ladies on their backs.”
But if the name is used in shortened form as an offensive nickname or to say something negative about someone, then it is prohibited as Allaah says (what means): {….and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name [i.e. mention] of disobedience after [one’s] faith. And whoever does not repent — then it is those who are the wrongdoers. } [Quran 49:11]
