Question:
What is the authenticity of the following reports[which I read long ago from a book(in ignorance) written in Urdu language] and if any one of these is authentic then please besides quoting also mention comments of great schlors also(so that I may understand that clearly) It is reported that Prophet Muhammad(peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 1)"One who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy and one who does not forgive will not be forgiven," [Musnad Ahmad 7/71 hadith 19264) 2)"Show mercy, mercy will be shown to you and forgive others Allah will forgive you." [Musnad Ahmad 2/682 hadith:7062] I know the hadith[in saheeh al-Bukhaari 5997] in which(at the end) the Messenger of Allah(blessings & peace of Allah be upon him) says:"The one who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy." but I am concerned with the above hadiths. Also I read on that book: Once Moosa(peace be upon him) asked to Allah "O Allah, what is reward of one who enjoins his brother what is good and forbids what is evil?" Allah replied, for every word I will write for him reward of worship for one year and I shy to give him punish of hell (Mukashafat-ul-Quloob pg.48) Please note these were written in another language so while translating I may have comitted mistakes. Moreover I do not know if the references given on that book are correct or not Jazakallah
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
The first Hadeeth was reported in the Musnad of Ahmad, and Shaykh Shu‘ayb Al-Arnaa’oot said in his commentary on it: "It is an authentic Hadeeh without the addition: 'And whoever does not forgive, will not be forgiven' as it is Hasan Lighayrihi (good due to other Ahaadeeth, i.e. it is not good in itself but due to other Ahaadeeth that support it."
The same applies to the second Hadeeth: it was reported by Imaam Ahmad and Shaykh Shu‘ayb Al-Arnaa’oot classified its chain of narrators as Hasan (good).
As regards the story about Moosa we did not find it in any of the sources.
Allaah Knows best.
