All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Whether Prophet Idrees (Enoch) was sent before Nooh (Noah), may Allaah exalt their mention, is a matter of difference of opinion among the scholars. The strongest opinion is that Nooh was sent before Idrees, because the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said (in the long Hadeeth about the Intercession on the Day of Judgment): “Go to Nooh as he is the first Messenger sent by Allaah." For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa ">145687.
Ibn Al-‘Arabi said in Al-Ahkaam:
“Nooh was the first Messenger whom Allaah sent to the people of earth after Aadam (Adam) to forbid wedlock to daughters, sisters, paternal aunts and maternal aunts, and to impose other obligations, as mentioned in an authentic Hadeeth from the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. The historians who said that Idrees was sent before Nooh are mistaken. The evidence that they are indeed mistaken in their following of the Jewish literature and Israelisms, is the authentic Hadeeth about the Ascension of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam: when he met Aadam and Idrees, Aadam said to him, "Welcome, O righteous Prophet and righteous son", and Idrees said to him, "Welcome, O righteous Prophet and righteous brother." If Idrees were a forefather to Nooh in the lineage of Muhammad, he would have said to him, "Welcome, O righteous Prophet and righteous son", but since he told him "Welcome, O righteous Prophet and righteous brother", it indicates that they had a common forefather – Nooh. Any fair-minded person would not raise any objection after (hearing) this.” [End of quote]
Allaah Knows best.
