All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
‘Aa’ishah narrated that a man came to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and expressed his love for him, which exceeded that of himself, his wife and his children. The man said to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that he would be at his house and remember the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. He added that he would not gain respite until he came to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and saw him. The man was sad because he would not see the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in Paradise, for he would not be in the same rank as him, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. When this happened, this verse was revealed. [At-Tabaraani: Al-’Awsat and As-Sagheer]
According to Al-Qurtubi, that Companion was ‘Abd Allaah ibn Zayd ibn ‘Abd Rabbih Al-’Ansaari, who was made to see the (Athaan) call for prayer in a vision – whose story is well known.
Al-Qurtubi mentioned another saying on the authority of Ath-Tha‘labi indicating that the Companion was Thawbaan, the servant of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
