Question:

I have a waswas about Isa alayhisalaam. It's about what powers he will get when he returns, as i've read in sahih muslim that Isa will be given to power to kill kaafirs with his breath when he returns. But when Isa returns will he also be given the power to revive the dead, like he was given before? Because if he was given both powers at the same time ( power to revive dead and power to kill using breath) then would'nt that confuse people and make them think that Isa is the one who has these powers, when it is actually Allah who allowed him to do that? Please answer about whether Isa will be given both these abilities at the same time when he returns, and how to deal with this waswas.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The Hadeeth in Saheeh Muslim reads: “Every non-believer who would smell the odor of his self [i.e. of ‘Eesa -Son of Marry] would die and his breath would reach as far as he would be able to see.

Al-Qurtubi may Allaah have mercy upon him said in Al-Mufhim: “It means that Allah Almighty strengthened the breath of ‘Eesa (Jesus) – may Allaah exalt his mention – until it reaches the place where his sight reaches. It means: that the disbelievers do not come close to him; rather, they would perish when they see him and when his breath reaches them, as a support from Allah and protection from Him, and a manifestation of a Miracle and a Blessing [from Allah].” [End of quote]

There is nothing in the Sunnah that indicates whether or not ‘Eesa (Jesus) will be able to revive the dead after his descent. If it is assumed that he will be able to do that, then there is no confusion or delusion, praise be to Allah. All of that is an honor and a miracle by which Allah Almighty supports him because of His Wisdom in that. Despite all of this, ‘Eesa may Allaah exalt his mention acknowledges that he is a Servant of Allah and that he has come to rule by the Sharee’ah of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

Allah Knows best.
