Question:

During the Friday prayer, electricity was cut off. Those who prayed outside the Masjid could not hear or see the Imaam. One of them advanced and led them in the Friday prayer while the Imaam led another congregational prayer inside the Masjid. What is the ruling on the congregation outside the Masjid? May Allaah reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

If some worshippers could not hear the voice of the Imaan during the Friday prayer and they could not see him, so they advanced one of them or he advanced by himself to lead them and complete their Friday prayer, then their prayer is valid because the Imaam of those who prayed outside the Masjid – I mean the Imaam whose voice was cut off and they could not see him or see those who are standing behind him – take the ruling of the Imaam unable to complete the prayer. There is no harm in advancing another instead of him. ‘Amr bin Maymoon said: "The day ‘Umar was stabbed, I was standing and there was nobody between me and him except ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Abbaas. As soon as he said Takbeer, I heard him saying: 'The dog has killed me or has eaten me'.  ‘Umar held the hand of ‘Abdur-Rahmaan ibn ‘Awf and let him lead the prayer. He led the people in a short prayer " [Al-Bukhari]

Allaah Knows best.
