Question:
I don't know if its Hadith but I heard it long back and I want to know about its authenticity. A Sahabi went to Rasool Allah (SAW) with the request to arrange money for his daughters marriage. Prophet (SAW) asked him to see another Sahabi in that regard. When he reached his home he heard conversation between the Sahabi (to whom Prophet (SAW) asked him to see) and his wife. They were fighting because his wife raised the light of the candle (Diya) in the night due to that more kerosene had been burnt than usual. On hearing this he thought that how can he who is fighting for little oil can give him such an amount he is looking for so he didn't knock the door and returned back to Prophet (SAW) and explained him what he heard. Prophet (SAW) asked him to go back again and see him. When he went there he asked permission to get in and then put before him reason of coming. The Sahabi, who was fighting for oil, brought money and handed it to him. Looking on his this act he (who needed money) started weeping. The Sahabi who gave him money inquired if he needs more money. To which he (who took the money) said that he didn't see that amount in his whole life and told him that he heard the conversation between him (who was asked for money) and his wife. He also said that when he could give him such an amount then how come he was fighting with his wife. To that the other Sahabi replied that Allah will take an account for the excess oil which was burnt during night and for the money he is giving he will take the account from Allah.
Answer:
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
We do not know this story and could not find it in the authentic books of Shariah.
However, the life of the companions proves the essence of the above story. The essence is that the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) used to stay away from every extravagance and they used to feel complete responsibility for every coin if it were not spent for the Sake of Allah. At the same time they did not care if their entire wealth was spent to please Allah; or even their souls if sacrificed in obedience to Allah.
Allah knows best.
