Wearing Shoes in Prayer: How to Sit Down

27-9-2003 | IslamWeb

Question:

My question is in reference to praying while wearing shoes. The question arised in a study group when it was mentioned that wearing shoes is permissible. The question is, how is a person to sit between the 2 Sajdas or any other time in Salat when you are sitting while wearing shoes?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Wearing shoes while performing the prayer does not hinder the proper sitting posture during the prayer. The legislated sitting posture between each two prostrations and during Tashahhud (recitation of the invocation: At-tahiyatu Lillah…) is done by stretching the left foot and sitting on it, and erecting the right foot. As for the final Tashahhud (directly before Tasleem-for ending the prayer), it is done by stretching out ones left foot letting it project from right side with ones buttocks resting on the ground. Wearing shoes does not hinder such posture, and therefore, there is no need for taking them out.
