Hanging the garment below the ankle without arrogance

Question:

I have a question about the "Isbaal" clothes above the ankle. I have heard that Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah and Sheikh Shawkani said: that there is no harm if you leave your clothes hangs below your ankle if you are doing that without arrogance (I don't know how you call it in English). Can you please tell me the source or witch book it is called?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him is of the view that the general Ahadeeth that prohibit wearing clothes below the ankle are restricted by the Ahadeeth that prohibit doing so out of pride and arrogance. Therefore, if wearing clothes below the ankle is for the purpose of pride and showing off, then this is forbidden, and if it is not for this purpose, then it is not forbidden.

For more benefit, you may refer to the book of Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him entitled Sharh Al-'Umdah, and for the view of Shaykh Ash-Shawkaani may Allaah have mercy upon him please refer to his book entitled 'Nayl Al-Awtaar'.

Allaah Knows best.
