Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
Drinking alcohol is considered a great sin. A person drinking alcohol deserves punishment if he is caught. The punishment mentioned in this regard is that his prayer will not be accepted for 40 days and that on the day of Judgement he will be given the sweat of the people of the fire to drink if he does not repent. However if he repents, Allah will forgive him. The evidence is the saying of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) "Whoever drinks alcohol, his prayers will not be accepted for forty days, but if he repents, Allah will forgive him. And if he drinks again, his prayers will not be accepted for another forty days. And if he repents, Allah will forgive him, …". [Narrated by Al-Tirmizi and Nasa’e]
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) also said: "Any intoxicating drink is forbidden, and Allah promised those who drink, to make them drink from the sweat of the people of Hellfire…." [Narrated by Muslim]
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) further said: "Whoever dies as an alcohol addict will meet Allah as an idol worshipper." Narrated by Tabarani, and Albani said that this is an authentic Hadith.
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) also said: "The person who reminds others of his/her generosity, the one who is undutiful to one’s parents, and the alcohol addict will not enter Paradise."
Shikh al-Albani said 'this is an authentic Hadith', and recorded it in Saheeh Al-Jamia.
This is a threat that we believe in, in general, however individually speaking, when a Muslim dies his fate is in the Hand of Allah; if He wishes He forgives him, and if He wishes, He punishes him.
Allah knows best.
