Women working at night

Question:

What is the Islamic ruling on women working at night? Is there a separate ruling if the woman is married or single?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Women are allowed to do jobs that fit their physical nature as well as their qualifications if there is a need, and if there is no fear of temptation, and provided the woman respects the Islamic rulings: she should not be in seclusion with non-Mahram men, ther should be no forbidden mixing, and no other prohibided matters.

Now, if the conditions of such a job require her to work at night while the above conditions are met, then this is permissible. In any case, she should not go out except with the permission of her husband if she is married, and it is not permissible that her job be a reason for neglecting what is obligatory upon her, like nurturing her children and looking after her home.

Allaah Knows best.
