Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
It is disliked to drink from water-skins. Bukhari reported that Ibn Abbas narrated: “The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) forbade us to drink from water-skins”.
The majority of scholars are of the view that the meaning here is that it is disliked, not forbidden.
Tirmizi reported that Um Thabit (Radiya Allahu Anha) narrated: “The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) came to her once and drank from the water-skin while in a standing position”.
However, it is disliked to drink from water-skins for many reasons.
- The exhalations of a person drinking from it may render it stinking, so the next user will avoid it or be embarrassed to drink from it.
- The water-skin could contain something that could not be seen by the drinker, so he could absorb it and it might harm him.
- A person drinking from the water-skin could spill the water on himself and wet his clothes, or absorb more than needed and his breath might be interrupted.
Ibn al-Arabi said: ‘One of these reasons is enough to confirm that it is disliked. And if all these conditions are considered together then this strengthens the dislike.’
Ibn Abi Jumra said: ‘Fiqh considers that the dislike is because of all these matters.’
So, if the above reasons are not found then one may drink from the bottles.
Allah knows best.
