Use of human urine as a cure

Question:

From Saheeh al-Bukhari we know that urine of camels may be used for curing the ill. May the urine of other animals (cows, sheep etc.) be used for curing? May human urine be used as a medicine as some doctors consider it beneficial for curing certain diseases (so-called urine therapy)? We need your Fatwa with evidence from great Muslim scholars because this issue is important for the whole Ummah.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is confirmed in the Sunnah that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) ordered the people of Uraynah tribe to drink the milk and urine of camels as a medicine.

This is true, as it comes from the order of the infallible Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). This is also in keeping with the reality.

If it is confirmed by medicine that the urine of other animals is useful as a medicine, then this is permissible if it is permissible to eat their meat like sheep and cows, because the urine of an animal which is permissible for us to eat its meat, is pure, according to the preponderant opinion of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them.

As regards the urine of a human being, it is not permissible to use it as a medicine – if it is confirmed that it is a medicine – because it is impure.

It is only in case of necessity that it becomes permissible to use a medicine which is not pure according to the preponderant opinion of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them.

Allaah Knows best.
