Delaying ceremony after Nikah

Question:

I have just performed Nikah in December 2003, but the main ceremony will be after coming Eid-ul-Fitr, Insha Allah. First of all, I want know if it is legal in Islam to have Nikah and the ceremony is arranged after some time. Secondly, how can I be a good husband in every aspect in our religion?

Answer:

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

There is no harm that a period – short or long – passes between the marriage contract and the official ceremony.  But it is best to hasten to finish all the requirements unless there is a constraint which prevents that.  Indeed, the objective behind marriage is to guard chastity and to live in wedlock.

As for your question about the ideal husband, here are some things that you should consider:

1)The ideal husband is first of all, the one who chooses the pious and good mannered woman who will help him in this life and in his religion.

2)The husband has to sit with his wife and consult her to see how each one will deal with the other in the way that is pleasing.

3)The relationship should be cemented with affection, love, mutual understanding, compassion, tolerance and above all applying Qur'an in one’s life.  Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {…and He has put between you affection and mercy….}[30:21].  The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: “The best amongst you is the one who is good to his wife”.

Allah knows best.
