Forbidding non Muslims from entering Makkah

Question:

Why are non-Muslims not allowed in Mecca and other mosques?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

A non-Muslim is not allowed to enter Makkah, the evidence is the saying of Allaah (which means): {Verily, the Mushrikoon (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah, and in the Message of Muhammad - sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) - are Najasun (impure). So let them not approach Al-Masjid Al-Haram after this, their [final] year.}[Quran 9:28]. Imaam Al-Baghawi may Allaah have mercy upon him interpreted the above verse saying: "Allaah wanted to forbid them from entering the Haram (i.e. Makkah), because if they enter Makkah, they will be near the Haraam Mosque.'  So, this verse is evidence about forbidding the non-Muslims from entering Makkah, may Allaah protect it, and the reason why they are prohibited is because they are impure. Ash-Shawkaani may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'They are prohibited from entering Makkah because they are impure."

Therefore, the non-Muslims are morally impure because of associating partners with Allaah, and many of them are also physically impure, as they do not perform Ghusl (ritual bath) when in sexual defilement, they do not purify themselves, and do not avoid touching impurities. As regards the ruling of entering mosques other than the Haraam mosque in Makkah, please refer to Fataawa 81478, 82236 and 85800.

Allaah Knows best.
